Weapons of mass distraction?

December 30th, 2005

Turns out that “Dr. Germ” and “Mrs. Anthrax” weren’t quite the threats that they had been portrayed to be. Mixed in with other stories on a variety of news sites, you can see that they were set free without charge after 2 1/2 years’ imprisonment. Does anyone remember the original rationale for invading Iraq?

Rockin’ Vikings

Well, at least it ain’t the First Baptist Church!

December 26th, 2005

The revelations just keep coming and coming. Because, as the Bush Administration’s propaganda machine would have us believe, all people who aren’t white and Christian are dire threats to the security of the US. Of course, the largest threat to us all are those evil Muslims, so now we’re monitoring their places of worship for radiation. Never mind that the government admits that the largest threats for terrorism domestically are animal rights and ecological extremists. In fact, the Bush Administration’s position has been that Islam is not a threat.

Honestly, if we had more of this and less of this, the world would be a safer place.

Free music. Probably not illegal.

Epitonic Radio

Probably won’t work with linux. Go cry in your granola, hippie.

Remember folks, you heard it at FES first! Oh wait — the copyright is 2002. Hmmm.

In that case: Remember folks, you heard it here about three years after you probably heard it on BoingBoing.

What the hell is “Math Rock?”

Pixelmania

December 22nd, 2005

If you ever wondered how to make those really cool isometric pixel drawings that all the kids are into nowadays, look no further than this very nice tutorial.

You will finally see why God saw fit to bless us all with MS Paint.

I made some spiffy little 16×16 colored cubes based on this stuff for a little GUI tool I did at work. It took me about 10 minutes, and it looks better than some of the icons we’ve had professionally done. I like the kitchen idea. Someone needs to turn this into the cutesiest home remodeling software ever made.

Media: You’re Still Hurting America

December 21st, 2005

What good can remarks on television such as this possibly do? Further promote the dumbing down of America? Increase the arrogance and self-righteousness the rest of the world hates us for?

Back during the 2004 election, Jon Stewart went on weasely FTucker Carlson’s “debate show” to try to convince him that his program, which was aired on CNN, has a moral responsibility to not degrade into a Jerry-Springer-esque slapfight.

Jon Stewart showed remarkable restraint, and if you have not seen this clip, please watch it Here.

Being spied on makes you safer!

So President Bush addressed the nation the other morning. It’s amazing how he can spout lies and half-truths, and yet still seem to believe what he’s saying. In one breath he’ll state, “I took an oath to defend the Constitution, and I have no greater responsibility than to protect our people, our freedom, and our way of life,” and in another he’s explaining how ordering the NSA to spy domestically without warrants is “consistent with U.S. law and the Constitution,” when it’s clear that the Congress requires a warrant to pass through a court, albeit a secret one. It’s particularly interesting that somehow the leak about the exectutive order “is illegal, alerts our enemies, and endangers our country.” yet leaking information about active undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame is somehow an acceptable political strategy.

Enough! When are Americans going to wake up and taste the load of shit they’ve been being fed since 9/11?

Coincidence?

In November, President Bush’s approval rating was 37%.

In Russia today, the percentage of people who who look favorably on the direction their country went under Stalin is 37%.

Personally, I’m thinking about worshipping the Google cluster as some sort of omniscient oracle.

King Kong = Fiction?

December 15th, 2005

Writes guest author TracyT:

Dr. John Terborgh (a professor at Duke Univerity) has astoundingly denounced “King Kong” as impossible.

“The notion that dinosaurs could survive on a tiny mid-oceanic island is preposterous,” said John Terborgh, a professor of environmental science at Duke University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

And evidently National Geographic has run out of material, so they printed an article on the subject.

I’m sure he will have upcoming articles on how the Balrog in
Fellowship of the Ring” could not survive while on fire, how nuclear testing could not have created Godzilla, and how Axel Foley could not have possibly gotten past the Playboy Mansion security in “Beverly Hills Cop II.”

…and I’m still not falling for any banana in my tailpipe.
