Hate snails? Love dog? Got a hankerin’ for some octopus balls? Take it to the comments section, fools!

Update: I was serious about the octopus balls. When one of these opens up in Denver, I am going to be all over it.

BOFH Global Warming Excuse of the Day…..SUNSPOTS!

June 20th, 2006

There’s an interesting article from the NOAA on the variability of solar output and the correlation with average global temperature–of particular interest is the graph relating the number of sunspots to the average sea surface temperature for the last 140 years. The article states that some scientists think that as much of 1/3 of global warming during the 20th century can be attributed to the increased solar activity during that time.

Our friend B.K. is of the opinion that human influence is completely negligible in the face of the natural variability of solar activity.

Asquare thinks that common sense would dictate that the human influence is significant (ever been to Jersey?), but that 2/3 might be a bit high an estimate…..what do you think?

Here’s a sample from wayne allard’s newsletter.

I believe the 93-6 vote sends a strong message to our allies in the Middle East and to the terrorists who threaten our way of life that the United States is committed to staying the course in Iraq.
As much as I desire the return of our men and women overseas, the “cut and run” strategy that many Democrats are advocating at this critical time would be interpreted as a lack-of-resolve and undermine our fight in the global War on Terror.

How does a 93-6 vote translate into ‘many Democrats advocating cut and run’? Sounds to me like 6 did.

Fuck you, wayne allard. Don’t talk to me like that.

Furthermore, he goes into:

“The story that has stuck with me over the years concerning how the ‘death tax’ has impacted Colorado families is that of the Laurence family in Garfield County,” added Senator Allard. “The family was forced to sell their 1,810 acres of ranch land just north of Carbondale, Colorado a few years ago. The daughter of the late Rufus Merrill Laurence explained to me after they had to sell their family ranch, that the ‘death tax’ forced the sale of the family’s ranch, land Mr. Merrill hoped would be in his family for generations to come.”

Wayne, one acre of land near Carbondale is worth 15 large, conservatively. An 1810 acre ranch is worth at least 27 MILLION dollars. I guess if that makes the Merrills the ‘hard working Americans’ he mentions earlier in his article, I’m worthy of food stamps and medicaid.
I’m so mad at you right now Wayne that I’ll do the little I have in my power to ensure that you are not reelected. Namely, tell everyone I know that you are a LIAR, and thankfully your lies are printed on your website for the world to see. Your empty rhetoric may not stand up in court as libel, but in the mind of this ‘hard working American’ it is.

The same goes out to the partisan democrats, especially that Hillary bitch. Idiocy like Wayne’s spills out of your mouth like pus from a festering wound. If you run for president i’ll shove my foot so far up your ass you’ll have shoe leather for a tongue. Watch it!

Mmmm, Mmmm! Look at all the Gatorade!

Yay! Doctor Fun is finally dead!

June 12th, 2006

Burn in hell, Doctor Fun.

Yes, the dork responsible for the net’s most unfunny comic is throwin in the towel.  Long live the Dilberthole!

Here’s a random sampling of just how unfunny Doctor Fun was.  (site currently slashdotted by people wondering what the big deal is)

You can’t handle this beer!

June 11th, 2006

I’m a hop-head. Maybe it’s because of my childhood in Boulder, and hops’ relation to cannabis, but I just can’t get enough. I love the smell of them, their bitterness, hell, even their vibrant green. As a hop-head, one of my favorite beer styles is an IPA. When I heard about the “120 Minute IPA” from Dogfish Head, I had to give it a try.

120 Minute IPA is truly pushing the limit of beer. At $10 for one (yes, just one) 12 ounce bottle, it’s a little expensive. At 20% ABV, it’s ungodly strong. With 120 IBU (international bitterness units) it’s intensely bitter - Hazed and Infused only rates 70 IBU. It’s boiled for a full two hours, and hopped for the entire time. It’s then fermented for 30 days, and dry-hopped daily. In order to get that much alcohol, a special breed of yeast is used (there’s no alcohol added). The bottle claims that it can be aged for up to a decade.

Tasting the beer is as intense as it sounds. The beer needs to be warmed a bit - fridge cold is just too cold. When you open it, the aroma of the hops is quite inviting. It pours as a nice amber without an excess of carbonation. The first sip is something that you really can’t be prepared for. The first hit is bitter. Not an “oh my God I ate something poisonous” bitter, but a very clean, yet fairly intense bitterness. That bitterness fades quickly, like the heat from wasabi. After that initial bitterness, the sweetness is quite surprising. In order to get as much alcohol as they did, the brewers had to use a huge amount of malt, and that malt is still quite evident, moreso than the hops. After that initial bitterness, the hops aren’t nearly as pronounced as I would expect. They’re definitely there, and the bitterness isn’t as shocking after the first sip, but they still maintain a level of subtlety that’s surprising in this overwhelming beer.

This is not a beer for beginners, but it’s definitely worth a try for the experienced palate. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’d be nearly impossible for any normal human to drink more than one. The play that the bitter hops, the sweet malt, and the strong alcohol have with each other are an interesting exploration into what beer can actually be. I bought two bottles. The second bottle will be aging next to some intense Belgian ales for a few years to see how the flavors develop with time. The stock in the state (if you can find it) will disappear rapidly, with a second release in the fall, and then the season’s beer will be gone. I give this beer an 8.5.

Everyone’s seen the bizarre and disturbing mostly-Chris-Cunningham official Aphex Twin videos–however a while back I was “surfing” youtube.com with a feeling something reminiscent of the old 1996 days of “surfing the web” and came to a cold halt when I ran across some fan-made Aphex Twin videos.

Warning! Creepy and depressing!:

  • to my further horror, it looks like youtube has pulled the video for Alberto Balsalm! Someone please post a link if you can find it! (You’ll know it when you see it: nice pleasant slowly blossoming ocean nuke testing, and then BAM - GUY GETTIN KILLED - back to serene nuke tests.)

ishityounot.info launch

June 6th, 2006

May Teh Internet Gods bless TracyT’s new IShitYouNot.Info site. I imagine there will be some overlap with the FES Random from teh Intarwebz category, but the internet is one big huge sick donkey-humping mess and there’s room for everyone here.

Is it coincidence that he launched this site on the Day of The Beast?

(Too bad it runs on Winderrz, the OS of the Beast)
