“A squatbot stole my ruttingrhinos.com!” and other tales of woe

September 15th, 2006

Check out the big soap opera still going on over at DNSstuff.com.
The moral of the story is don’t do a WHOIS query on a domain you want until the very moment you are ready to buy it, and don’t use web-based WHOIS search tools at all — use your linux box, duh.

It’s Enough to Make You Cry

September 12th, 2006

Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter’s alternate history of the past five years. What might have been…

As Bush warned, catching terrorists wasn’t easy, but he kept at it. At the battle of Tora Bora, CIA operatives on the ground cabled Washington that Osama bin Laden was cornered, but they desperately needed troop support. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld immediately dispatched fresh forces, and the evildoer was killed. While bin Laden was seen as a martyr in a few isolated areas, the bulk of the Arab world had been in sympathy with the United States after 9/11 and shed no tears. After their capture, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and other 9/11 terrorists were transported to the United States, where they were tried and quickly executed.

An Open Letter to the Young Lady From Bookmooch.com Who Was Disappointed in the Feedback Score I Gave Her

September 8th, 2006

Dear Ms. X,

I’m sorry to have upset you, but I’ll stand by my comment. Here’s why: You lied to me. You told me that you shipped the book, but then you waited almost a week to do so. That’s rude. Bewildering too, considering you could have just as easily chosen to inform me of the delay. Maybe you didn’t expect me to look at the postmark, but curiosity got the better of me after it apparently took 15 days for the book to arrive. After that long a wait, I was beginning to think that media mail was unreliable.

Also, the book is not in “perfect condition” as you claim. It’s an old, well-worn, yellowed copy. Not that I care about the condition of the book, but by stating so in a public forum as you did, you appear to be lying once again. (In the future you may want to consider noting the condition of the books in your inventory to avoid further disputes.)

Finally, if you had emailed me explaining the situation instead of calling me names (”anal-retentive”) in a public forum, I’d have gladly changed my feedback score. But this sort of vindictive rhetoric over one lousy feedback point? You come off as petty and spiteful.

Sincerely,

-C

P.S. Your excuse about not being able to get to the post office for a few days because you lacked a car was laughably transparent and an obvious half-truth, if not an outright lie.

Chomsky and Zinn do LOTR DVD Commentary

September 7th, 2006

The war in Middle-earth is really about the pipeweed trade. Over at McSweeney’s.

Zinn: Think of the scenes in the prologue with all the arrows hitting these thousands of Orcs. We’re supposed to think that this is a good thing.

Chomsky: I think this is a tragedy, this story. Because it’s about two cultures. And poor leadership. It’s a human tragedy, and an Orcish tragedy.

Funny stuff.
